The Journey from a Nursing Student to NCLEX Exam and Being a Licensed Nurse

Nursing has always been at an urge of a regular change over the years. Institutions collaborate with the top health care organizations and make sure that the students are provided with the best education to meet the skills currently required.

The collaborative effort finally arrives to a test which nursing students have to pass – the NCLEX RN or RPN exams. This step is as important as the education and the practice. Once a nurse passes these tests, she/he receives the nursing license.

For an entry-level nurse, the competence and the skills are needed to be assessed and evaluated. Passing the exam ensures that the nurse is capable of performing as a health care professional safely and skillfully.

The journey will go as follows-

  1. Apply to a college.
  2. The college will inform if you’re eligible to attempt the exam. In case you’re an international student, you’ll require completing an assessment by the National Nursing Assessment Service.
  3. The next step involves registering with Pearson VUE and pay the required fee.
  4. Finally, schedule a time and set the Pearson VUE exam location.

As of now, there are 12 certified Pearson Professional NCLEX RN and RPN test centers available in Canada.

Online Degrees Vs Traditional Degrees

Sloan Consortium, a group of organizations dedicated to quality online education, said in the seventh edition of its annual report on the state of online learning in the U.S. that online enrollments, which have been growing at a faster rate than the total higher education student population, are showing no signs of slowing.

The report stated that over 4.6 million students were taking at least one online course during the fall term of 2008 – an increase of 17 percent over the previous year and far exceeding the 1.2 percent growth in the overall higher education student population.

It is clear that online education is emerging as a popular choice for the new-age student. However, a debate is still raging over which is better – online degree programs or on-campus degrees. While there is no easy answer to this because which of the two alternatives work better for you depends to a large degree on your circumstances, let’s compare the two modes of education on some important parameters to get a clearer picture.

Accessibility

Online: One of the greatest breakthroughs of online education has been that it has made higher education accessible to many people, who are unable to attend a bricks and mortar school for a variety of reasons. Moreover, online students are not bound by any geographical limits. They can apply to any school of their choice as they are free to pursue an online program from anywhere.

Campus: Campus-based education still works within a fairly rigid structure. From location to lodging, everything needs to fall in place if you are considering traditional, classroom-based degree programs.

Validity

Online: “Diploma mills” are the biggest bane of online education. Diploma mills are fraudulent institutions that sell unaccredited degrees, which involve no serious academic study. It is, therefore, imperative that students check the credentials of a university offering online programs. Accredited online degrees are accepted as valid degrees by academicians as well as employers. There is no greater indicator of its validity than the availability of federal student aid to those enrolled in an eligible online degree program at an accredited Title IV-eligible institution.

Campus: Although there may be some fraudulent bricks and mortar schools, the prevalence of such schools is comparatively less than substandard or unaccredited online schools. However, even if you are attending campus-based programs, it’s good to have your tracks covered by checking the reputation and accreditation status of the school.

Acceptance

Online: Various research organizations have statistics to prove the growing acceptability of online degrees. Academic leaders as well as employers now acknowledge the legitimacy of online programs and most treat them at par with traditional degrees.

Campus: According to some experts, certain programs are less suited for online only schools. Campus-based learning is generally advisable for disciplines like engineering. Programs that require extensive practical and hands on training or involve great deal of laboratory work are better pursed at a bricks and mortar institute.

Quality

Online: This again ties back to the question of validity and …

Challenges of Online Education

By Jesse Whitehead

Enrollment in online education is at an all time high, according to a recent study by the Sloan Consortium. Based on responses from more than 2,200 colleges and universities across the U.S., the study reveals that 3.2 million students took at least one online course in the fall of 2005, an increase of 850,000 more than the year before. The report is available at www.sloan-c.org/publications/survey/index.asp.

With the rise in popularity of e-learning comes some unique challenges not extant with more traditional classrooms. Students need to be aware of the differences between online and traditional classes and be prepared to make the necessary adjustments. Significant challenges faced by online students include the following:

  • Technical problems. Computer hardware and peripheral devices such as printers, modems and routers are not indestructible; as with any other man-made device, they can break down or malfunction at the most inopportune time. In addition to equipment failure, an older computer may be incompatible with some software required for the course. Viruses, trojans, spyware and other malware could infect a computer, causing it to run poorly or not at all. A slow internet connection might cause problems logging into class, retrieving and submitting assignments, and posting to threaded discussions. Any of these problems could cause a great deal of frustration for the student trying to complete course assignments. Therefore, it is important for the student to have access to a backup computer to use in case of equipment malfunction.
  • Staying motivated. Going to school always requires a certain level of motivation from a student regardless of whether it’s a “bricks-and-mortar” institution or online class. In a traditional classroom setting, a student has live, face-to-face interaction with the instructor and fellow students — a camaraderie that may help boost enthusiasm and motivation for the course. In an internet-based class however, there is no live contact with instructor and classmates — the student works alone in a virtual environment. This lack of live contact may lead to a feeling of isolation, and make it difficult for a student without a high internal commitment or personal drive to stay motivated during the course.
  • Self-discipline. As with motivation, a student needs good self-discipline to succeed online. The freedom and flexibility of e-learning is what’s so attractive to many people. There’s no obligation to login to class at any particular time or place — you can go to class and do your assignments whenever it’s convenient for you. However, this same freedom can lead to procrastination, and cause the unwary or undisciplined student to fall behind in his assignments. Once behind, it can be difficult to catch up.
  • It’s difficult to improve oral communication skills. There are many classes such as speech, drama, debate, teacher education and so forth that require the student to make oral presentations in front of a group of people. With online courses this is not practical, as the classroom is virtual, and the students are not all gathered together at one time in one room.

Algorythm of Microcycles – Technology for Beginners

Algorithm   of   Microcycles

In pedagogical practice at the second period  of music education the considerable majority of pupils inevitably spend a lot of time and efforts to master by professional skills of playing music instrument and to perfect different methods of practical activity with music information. In  the process of  integrating the adopted  music information  from sheet a pupil  is confronted with great difficulties in perception  of study material , its synthesis and realization on an  instrument. A heavy study load  is the cause of emerging negative  emotions, lowers  child’s  interest to the music subject, and as a result of  that , the quality of knowledge worsens, the speed and efficiency of music teaching are restricted. It is necessary to find more effective ways and methods on teaching of children, to pay special attention not only to a certain kind of activity, but also to the nature of  formation of each skill separately.

The pedagogic task at given period of teaching consists in that to give the intensive development to the natural gift of a child, rationally to realize his potential music possibilities  in special  psychosomatic action as a result. Speaking about the main task  in this direction  it is necessary to emphasize application of sequential alteration of  kind of mental activity of pupil. In this connection, and with the aim to distribute the appearing sum study load in child’s mental sphere on separate its components in according to their dynamic and kinetic characteristic features, the new technology of  music teaching  ” Algorithm  of Microcycles ” has been developed. The way of  perception of  music information through the brief episodic cycles is put in the base of this technology. Given methods allows a child to enter into practical lesson actively, to limit  fatigue in time , to master professional skills dynamically  and , as a result , to eliminate the negative attitude to study process.

                       Physiological  Basis

The insistent necessity of alteration of pupil’s attention is dictated by peculiarities of physiology of the higher nervous  activity, namely  that, if  with appearing of more-less long-term existing  in the central nervous system of  the nidus of stagnant excitation (on extra monotonous mental activity ) , naturally, sings of  fatigue of the nerve cells-neurons are increased in the range of this nidus and work capacity of these neurons is decreased in the view of  lengthening period of remembering and reproducing of any information. If at the first symptoms of  fatigue and reducing of the pupils’ attention, sequentially to alter their attention to other kind of work, the stagnant excitation gradually  subsides, as other nervous centre of  brain  is excited already. The methods ” Algorithm of  Microcycles ”  consists of  five short episodic elements. The kind of   activity in each algorithm is solitary and distinctive from the next one in its nature of activity, thus applying step ( cyclic ) alteration of pupil’s attention , the capability of  the nervous centers to improve their physiological lability is increased and, as a result, motion of the following excitable …
